The original reddish brown Goldstone was created in Italy in the 17th century- the glass of this type is colourless... the "gold" flecks comes from copper oxide being added to molten glass while in its liquid state. The slower the glass is cooled, the larger the copper crystals can end up. Other colours of Goldstone are created with different mineral inclusions - the use of cobalt creates Blue Goldstone, Purple Goldstone is achieved by using Manganese, and Green is caused by Chromium. Goldstone has become a popular material to create beads, carvings, tumbled "stones", hearts, cabochons and jewelry with. Present day, most Goldstone is produced in China.
